SIDE ONE Jazz Programs - www.sideonejazz.org
A few words from SIDE ONE’s President, Norman David:
SIDE ONE Jazz Programs has been a dream of mine for several years and I’m happy to report that the organizational process is off and running. Although still in the developmental stages, the first concerts are now clearly in view. With the help of my very talented friend and SIDE ONE’s Vice-President, Lars Halle, all the T’s are being crossed and the I’s dotted. It’s involved but rewarding work. We are committed to establishing a forum to present the best in new and exciting jazz music. Following are some of the particulars.
Side One jazz Programs (SOJP) has been founded to present, document, and foster the creation of instrumental jazz music that is culturally significant, of high artistic merit, innovative, and entertaining—music that, because of its considerable depth and sophistication, has limited commercial appeal and minimal means of support from the mainstream music establishment. All public performances will take place in the greater Philadelphia area in the best facilities availalble. SOJP plans to present 3 – 4 concerts annually and the first performance will take place in near future. Support will come from grants, public solicitation of donations, fundraising recitals, and revenue from ticket sales.
The majority of performances presented by SOJP will
feature its showcase resident ensembles:
The Eleventet & The Galaxy Jazz Orchestra:
I have directed in concert, played with, composed for, and recorded with
various forerunners of both The Eleventet and The Galaxy Jazz Orchestra at venues in Philadelphia,
Boston, and central Maine. The permanent ensembles will be comprised of the
finest jazz instrumentalists available in the northeast U.S.
The Lars Halle Jazz Orchestra:
The Lars Halle Jazz Orchestra (LHJO) has been a part of the Philadelphia
jazz scene for over seven years. Under Lars’s leadership and compositional
skills, the ensemble, comprised of some of Philadelphia's top players, has
maintained a schedule of acclaimed performances at prominent area venues.
SIDE ONE Jazz Programs will also commission new compositions by some of the top composers and arrangers currently active. They will be invited to rehearse and attend the premieres of their new works and, when possible, will give talks on their music. SIDE ONE will also present special-event concerts featuring renowned guest artists and ensembles of varying sizes.
Stay tuned for more news as SIDE ONE Jazz Programs continues to evolve.
The concerts will be exciting and on the cutting edge of jazz performance.
